BURLINGAME, CALIF. - By cutting through the grease that slows down your Web browser, Ajax has assumed a starring role as a tiny technology that is drawing attention from the largest tech players.
Ajax is a combination of programming languages that is powerful and simple, enabling the latest slew of new products and applications for the Internet.
It is the special sauce behind making Google's (nasdaq: GOOG - news - people ) mapping and e-mail software, Yahoo!'s (nasdaq: YHOO - news - people ) Flickr photo-sharing site and Amazon.com's (nasdaq: AMZN - news - people ) A9 search engine all feel so seamless and quick.
Microsoft (nasdaq: MSFT - news - people ) Chief Technology Officer Ray Ozzie lamented in a memo made public earlier this month that his employer lost ground to other companies because of the technology. "We should've been leaders with all our Web properties in harnessing the potential of Ajax," he wrote.
Microsoft plans to pick up the slack with a suite of Web-based software and services under the umbrellas "Windows Live," which already features Ajax, and "Office Live," which likely will when it debuts next year.
