http://ait.ahram.org.eg/Index.asp?DID=8986&CurFN=maka0.HTM

Naked Objects Integration with Hibernate

The Naked Objects group has announced the Milestone 1 release of Naked Objects version 3.0, downloadable from sourceforge.net/projects/nakedobjects.

Many people first heard about Naked Objects from our first series of articles on TheServerSide almost three years ago. If the term 'Naked Objects' still means nothing to you, those articles provide a good summary of the concept and of its benefits.

Three years ago, the Naked Objects framework (version 1) was essentially a prototyping tool: By auto-generating an object-oriented user interface directly from the domain object definitions (using reflection) it facilitated the creation of prototype business applications. As we had already demonstrated by then, using this tool encouraged cleaner object designs, which in turn resulted in more agile systems.

The framework has moved on dramatically in the last three years. Version 2, which we started to develop in January 2004, was intended to be used not just as a prototyping tool, but as part of an enterprise architecture for delivering real applications.

In September 2004, the Department of Social and Family Affairs (DSFA) in Ireland (roughly equivalent to the Social Security Administration in the US, or the Department for Work and Pensions in the UK) took the bold decision to build its new enterprise architecture around the Naked Objects framework. In May 2006 it went live with the first of a new generation of large-scale business applications based on this new architecture: A replacement for the state Pensions Administration systems. This system is now intensively used by more than a 100 clerical and management staff, generating more than 250,000 transactions per day. Since May 2006 it has issued more than €1bn in pension entitlements - a mission critical system by any standards. A second set of applications went live at the end of July and by the end of this year there will be more than 200 users and several more applications. Several of these applications support very complex business operations.

Content Repository 2.0 spec in Early Review

Posted by: Joseph Ottinger on September 11, 2006 DIGG
Last week, the Content Repository for Java Technology 2.0 (JSR 283) had its early draft review released. Most changes seem centered on clarification of how XPath works within JCR, as well as some clarification on references.

JCR 1.0 now has a number of implementations: Jackrabbit, CRX (from Day Software, the sponsors of the spec), Alfresco, Magnolia, and a number of other projects all comply with JSR-170. What have your experiences been with the topic of content management, and with JCR in particular?

What do you expect to see out of JCR 2.0?

Make the Right Decision with Side-by-Side Comparison of Spring and EJB 3.0

Are you trying to choose between Spring and EJB 3.0? If you are you know what a hard decision it can be. Explore the similarities and differences between two of the most popular Java technologies today and learn key distinctions in making a technological decision between the two.
oftware development professionals today are faced with a bewildering array of technology choices. It is not always easy to decide which technologies are most appropriate to employ in solving any particular business problem. In the area of enterprise Java development, there has recently been quite a bit of debate regarding the Spring framework and the Enterprise Java Bean 3.0 specification. It can be hard to find clear and honest advice through the cacophony of opinion.

Still, the question of the relative strengths and weaknesses of each is a question I encounter frequently in my consulting work. But while there is plenty of information on Spring and EJB 3.0 individually, there is very little objective information that compares the two. This article will examine both technologies in relationship to one another with the goal of helping you understand the similarities and differences between them.

Spring and EJB are not the same thing. Most importantly, Spring is an implementation while EJB 3.0 is a specification. But they do have some areas of overlap, for example both provide a mechanism to deliver middleware services to Java applications. Spring was developed as a reaction against EJB and this makes comparison between the two natural. Particularly now that a new version of EJB is available, it is a good time to reevaluate how well EJB 3.0 has addressed the shortcomings of previous versions. And, to the extent that is has done so successfully, what does Spring continue to offer above and beyond EJB?

This article is the first in a two-part series; each article will look at different characteristics of Spring and EJB 3. The characteristics I chose are ones that are particularly meaningful within the context of enterprise application development. I will explore each characteristic using a flight booking example application, which has a rich domain model and illustrates well enterprise challenges such as concurrency, conversations, transactionality, messaging, and scheduling. I've also used unit tests to determine whether Spring and EJB 3.0 offer comparable functionality.

Role Based Access Control (RBAC)

One of the most challenging problems in managing large networks is the complexity of security administration. Role based access control (also called role based security), as formalized in 1992 by David Ferraiolo and Rick Kuhn, has become the predominant model for advanced access control because it reduces the complexity and cost of security administration in large networked applications.  Most information technology vendors have incorporated RBAC into their product line, and the technology is finding applications in areas ranging from health care to defense, in addition to the mainstream commerce systems for which it was designed. For more information, please contact us at:  rbac-info@nist.gov.

FileNet HQ Profile to Rise Under IBM

By Brian Womack

FileNet Corp.'s Costa Mesa headquarters is expected to become a major center for one of IBM Corp.'s software groups.

Big Blue's $1.6 billion acquisition of FileNet isn't expected to close until the fourth quarter—and some have speculated that rival bidders for the software maker may emerge.

But IBM is moving ahead with plans to turn FileNet's Costa Mesa campus into the headquarters for its unit that produces enterprise content management software, said Lee Roberts, chief executive of FileNet.

The move would combine FileNet's 1,700 employees with IBM's enterprise content management workers, giving Costa Mesa oversight of about 4,000 employees, Roberts said. IBM has about 340,000 workers in total.

The move also would give FileNet's team responsibility of roughly $850 million in annual revenue. FileNet's yearly sales are expected to hit more than $450 million.

"This is going to be huge," Roberts said.

Roberts declined to say who would head the unit. But he did say that "100% of the management team is staying."

He expects IBM to make an announcement on the unit's leadership once the acquisition is closer to being finalized. IBM announced its plan to buy FileNet on Aug. 10.

IBM gets a leg up in the fast-growing enterprise content management market with its FileNet buy.

Stefan Hepper: Why you should take an early look at the Java Portlet Specification V2.0

Since first versions of a standard or product typically focus on basic use cases with limited functionality, products supporting the specification end up adding on extensions to support more advanced scenarios. The second version of the Java™ Portlet Specification (JSR 286) is currently being developed to bring a standard solution and interoperability to accommodate most advanced use cases. Reviewing and providing feedback to the specification-in-progress gives you a way to make sure your specific needs are considered.

JBoss and Liferay provide open portals to SOA

Enterprise portals will be the first major application of SOA concepts for more than 50 percent of enterprises through 2007, according to Gartner. It's easy to agree with this projection, as the composite, extensible nature of portals -- plus established standards for portlet design and intercommunication -- fit the SOA definition perfectly.

IBM runs frozen chip at 500GHz

By Ben Ames, IDG News Service

IBM researchers have pushed a silicon-based microprocessor to speeds of 500GHz, more than 250 times faster than a typical commercial chip in a cell phone.

The research shows that chip makers can reach high speeds with low-cost manufacturing techniques and commercial silicon-based chip technology, said John D. Cressler, a professor at Georgia Tech's School of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

The new research, announced Tuesday by IBM, could also lead to more efficient chips, opening up new markets. Running at extremely high speeds, these chips could now find new applications in commercial communications systems, defense electronics, space exploration and remote sensing, according to IBM.

A team of scientists from IBM and Georgia Tech used an old hacker's technique to avoid melting the chip at such high speeds.

Extreme video gamers chill their chips with refrigerated mineral oil stored in the garage, but this team was able to make the chip much colder.

First, the researchers built a prototype silicon-germanium (SiGe) chip that ran at 350GHz at room temperature. IBM, in Armonk, New York, has been mixing germanium with silicon since 1998, using the mixture to make chips for cell phones and other mobile devices that demand reduced power consumption.

Then they used liquid helium to freeze their microprocessor to 451 degrees below zero Fahrenheit. Nature's coldest temperature, known as absolute zero, is just a few degrees lower, at minus 459.67 degrees Fahrenheit. With no risk of melting the chip, they pushed it to 500GHz.

By contrast, the latest commercial dual-core server chips from Intel and Advanced Micro Devices run at speeds between 2.5GHz to 3.5GHz.

The researchers now plan to return to their lab and find a way to push the chip even faster. IBM's computer simulations show that their chip could reach speeds of 1,000GHz, known as 1 Terahertz.

When I started learning Adobe After Effects, I realized that it includes a number of features and effects that can not only give more capabilities to my Macromedia Flash projects but save me time because of how the two applications are integrated.

After Effects gives you a variety of ways to create video with alpha, animate your graphic in 2D or 3D space, and then export your animation with a transparent background, as well as apply a variety of effects and presets that differentiate your Flash work.

This article will help you understand how After Effects integrates with Flash. You'll learn how to benefit from these features in your Flash projects by using the 3D layer feature in After Effects to give a 2D Flash graphic some 3D properties. You will export a Flash graphic to After Effects, convert it to a 3D layer in order to give it 3D properties, and then animate it before finally bringing it back into Flash.

Concurrency Utilities in JDK 5.0 talk

Posted by: Stephan Janssen on May 25, 2006
JDK 5.0 is a huge step forward in developing concurrent Java classes and applications, providing concurrency building blocks for both novices and experts. This talk from JavaPolis (registration required) explores the new low-level concurrency utilities included in JDK 5.0, and examine their features and scalability.

Prior to the release of JDK 5.0, the Java platform provided basic primitives for writing concurrent programs, but they were just that – primitive – and difficult to use properly. In addition to many new high-level concurrency utilities, such as semaphores, mutexes, barriers, thread pools, and thread-safe collections, JDK 5.0 also includes a number of JVM-level enhancements for concurrency, and a set of low-level concurrency utilities for developing highly scalable, nonblocking concurrent algorithms in Java.

Even with built-in support for locking, it has not been practical to develop nonblocking concurrent algorithms in Java prior to JDK 5.0. With JVM support for accessing hardware-provided concurrency instructions (such as CAS) and the atomic variable classes provided in java.util.concurrent.atomic, it is now possible to develop highly scalable, wait-free, lock-free classes in Java.

Making AJAX development easier

AJAX has the power to make your site more compelling and more dynamic, but AJAX development is often complicated, with much of the development time spent working around browser quirks and the fragility of AJAX components. Trust us, we know--the development of our own AJAX apps, like Google Maps and Google Calendar, caused us no small amount of AJAX-induced frustration.

That's why we're bringing you Google Web Toolkit. GWT is a new publicly available software development tool that makes creating AJAX applications much easier. With GWT, you can develop and debug your own AJAX applications in Java code using the Java development tools of your choice. When you deploy your application to production, the GWT compiler simply translates your Java application to browser-compliant JavaScript and HTML.

Check it out over on Google Code.

The Dark Side of the Search Engine Business

A new study by McAfee's SiteAdvisor Web ratings finds that sponsored results from some of the biggest names in the search engine business contain spyware, spam, scams and other Internet menaces.

The study, which was conducted by anti-spyware activist Ben Edelman and SiteAdvisor research analyst Hannah Rosenbaum, found that all the major search engines—Google, Yahoo, Microsoft's MSN, AOL and Ask.com—returned risky sites in results for popular keywords.

Even worse, sponsored results contained two to four times as many dangerous sites as organic results, according to the survey, which combined data from SiteAdvisor's automated Web crawlers and new searches using popular keywords culled from the Google Zeitgeist and other industry sources.

During the survey, which began in January 2006, the researchers used 1,394 popular keywords to extract top organic and sponsored search engine results and evaluated the site safety against SiteAdvisor's color-coded safety assessments.

The Future of Integration in Content Management

Organizations have information—data in neat rows and columns, document images, documents, forms, photos, and everything else that contains important organizational information—spread throughout the enterprise. What do you need to know to ensure you're able to see the right information (and all of it)?

John Harney
January/February 2006

Almost all of you reading this understand that "enterprise content management" (ECM) is an umbrella term for many technologies including imaging, workflow, document and records management, search, email management, Web content management, etc. As organizations find themselves increasingly overloaded with information; many are turning to these technologies, singly or in suites, to deal with the overload. As mature and complementary products and technologies, facile APIs have evolved with which to pretty painlessly integrate them.

Of course, other integration methods like Web services, XML, and Java adaptors have developed in recent years that accelerate integration to an even greater extent. The latest to get a lot of attention is federated repository management (or enterprise content integration), the ability of products like Venetica to provide bi-directional access to unstructured data in content management and other systems from disparate vendors. Though FRM deals largely with unstructured data, it promises to unify data across the enterprise, even structured data when platform vendors like Oracle use FRM to pull all data into a structured database.

So system integrators and customers have a lot of options. But, hey, it gets better. According to David Newman, vice president, Research, Enterprise Information Management, Gartner, integration disciplines that were previously, at best, tangential to ECM are now morphing into one another and in the process becoming increasingly relevant to it. Indeed, he observes that structured and unstructured content are converging, and managing the data overload from applications like enterprise report management (ERP), customer relationship management (CRM), custom legacy systems, mainframe-based systems, as well as all the technologies within CM requires a new approach. Gartner calls this "enterprise information management" (EIM).

Java Feature: Putting a Face on Web Services and SOA

Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) is a hot topic among analysts, CIOs, and technology marketers, but the path from high-level architectural principles to programming a functioning, real-world service isn't always clear, especially since, in the end, you still need to create a clean user interface that's as flexible as the services it consumes.

Why SOA?
The concepts underlying SOA aren't a major divergence from standard design principles like abstraction, encapsulation, and reuse. To put it simply, SOA is a software architecture in which application functionality is encapsulated as independent services. These services are in many cases Web Services but can also be services derived from various technology types. Clients in different applications or business processes can then consume these services. More important, an SOA is designed to decouple the implementation of a software service from the interfaces that call that service. This lets clients of a service rely on a consistent interface regardless of the implementation technology of the service.

Instead of building big monolithic applications, developers can build more agile services that can be deployed and reused across an organization for different applications and processes. This allows for better reuse of software functionality, as well as for increased flexibility because developers can evolve the implementation of a service without necessarily affecting the clients of that service.

To this end, the main requirement of an SOA is that the interface to the services is decoupled from the implementation. This separation provides the central benefit to SOA, both from a programmatic perspective and a financial one. Existing systems, both legacy and modern, internal to the company and external, can be exposed and consumed as services, simplifying the task of development.

Egypt's goal: To be the land of offshoring

By Andy McCue, Silicon.com
Published on ZDNet News: February 10, 2006, 12:26 PM PT

Egypt is making a pitch to be the next offshore outsourcing hot-spot, claiming that its foreign language skills and low labor costs put the country in a strong position to compete with India and Eastern Europe.

AT Kearney recently ranked Egypt number 12 in a list of top offshore outsourcing destinations and while the country's share of the offshore call-center market is still very small, analyst Datamonitor predicts it will grow by 52 percent over the next 12 months.

Egypt's leading call center company Xceed has a 1,200 seat operation at a new government-subsidized high-tech Smart Village just outside Cairo where salaries for staff working on offshore accounts range from around $350 to $440 per month.

Father of Java Reminds New York Audience That Java Works With All Languages

by JDJ News Desk

(March 9, 2006) - "There have been a number of language coming up lately," noted James Gosling today at Sun's World Wide Education & Research Conference in New York City. "PHP and Ruby are perfectly fine systems but they are scripting languages and get their power through specialization: they just generate web pages. But none of them attempt any serious breadth in the application domain and they both have really serious scaling and performance problems." He then dismissed C# as having had potential, but no longer: "We were afraid [Microsoft] were going to do something really creative - but they're hopelessly focused on one platform."

SOA realization: Service design principles

Level: Advanced

David J.N. Artus ( artusd@uk.ibm.com), Consulting IT Specialist, IBM

17 Feb 2006

Apply these principles to Service-Oriented Architecture design to help realize the vision of business agility through IT flexibility.

Introduction

Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) offers a vision of IT flexibility enabling business agility. In this article we will focus on two specific aspects of IT flexibility: decoupling and ease of process implementation. How well individual services are specified and realized has a significant impact on these aspects of IT flexibility, and hence on business agility. Our goal here is to provide guidelines for specifying and realizing services that enable the SOA vision. We use the following structure:

  • First, we describe the context within which services and service operations will be specified and realized. We consider the responsibilities of the SOA infrastructure and the responsibilities of the service.
  • Next, we consider the design principles that apply to the specification of services as a whole rather than to individual operations.
  • Finally, we state the design principles that apply to individual service operations.

The design principles we outline are intended to promote IT flexibility by increasing both decoupling and ease of process implementation, so we will complete our introduction by examining these ideas in more detail.

ECM is dead - long live ECM!

by Alan Pelz-Sharpe
01-Mar-2006

There is a hunger in larger enterprises for solutions to help the average worker handle the masses of information that they currently encounter. Management is placing equally strong demands to meet compliance requirements. Together these two drivers are providing a huge boost to the world of Enterprise Content Management (ECM).

Nevertheless these 2 trends have created new problems that, on the surface, seem difficult to reconcile, including:

  • Endemic competition between 2 camps within the enterprise: those espousing traditional, heavy-duty ECM vs. those seeking "ECM for the masses."
  • A dawning realization that the vast majority of content never makes it into either type of system.
  • Essential Records Management activities going almost completely ignored, despite the recent compliance push.

All is not lost. I'll argue that on the one hand, the technology may not matter that much anyway, since ECM is really about processes and standards. And as enterprises sort out those processes, they may well find a need for new types of tools and systems in any case.

Outsourcing in India Pays Off

By  Stan Gibson
News Analysis: Customers are beginning to look to Indian technology services firms to help cut costs and unify business processes

MUMBAI, India—Outsourcing to India has delivered rich rewards for a number of companies, freeing up scarce funds to fuel strategic investments and, in some cases, corporate turnarounds. Next up: enlisting Indian partners to revamp business processes.

And those partners are willing. Indian providers are increasingly moving beyond a reliance on labor arbitrage to create intellectual property they can sell to customers. Several large customers told their experiences here at the Nasscom conference.

"We're aiming for 35 percent productivity improvement next year. Working with Indian suppliers will be a key part of that," said Paul Coby, CIO of British Airways, of Harmondsworth, England.

He said BA has already taken great strides, reducing IT costs by 40 percent and cutting $2 billion from the cost of running the airline. BA has 10 IT partners, two of which, Tata Consultancy Services and NIIT, are in India, said Coby.

Borland to exit IDE market, focus on ALM

Borland Software plans to sell off its struggling Java development tools business to focus instead on selling services and products for managing software development, the company announced last week.
Borland is seeking a buyer for its IDE (integrated development environment) business, which includes its Delphi and JBuilder products. The move will allow it to focus on growing its business in the area of application lifecycle management, or ALM, it said.
As part of the ALM focus, Borland also announced that it has agreed to buy Segue Software, which makes software quality and testing products, in a transaction valued at about US$100 million.
Long known for its development tools, Borland has struggled to hold its footing in the IDE market amid tough competition – particularly from Eclipse, an open-source Java IDE with similar functionality to Borland's JBuilder.
Revenue from its IDE products accounted for just 7 percent of total revenue in the third quarter of 2005, down from 15 percent in the same quarter a year earlier, it said in a US regulatory filing in November.

Sun Saddles up Java 'Mustang'

Sun Microsystems has finally released what should be the last beta of JSE6 (Java Platform, Standard Edition 6), aka "Project Mustang."

According to the Mustang Web site, this release "provides a complete stable snapshot of the final release functionality.

"This beta build has undergone much more thorough testing and baking than the regular weeklies (which is why it may seem "old" to weekly build fans).

"This means it provides a good stable base for the general developer community to try out the new Mustang features."

Achieving Amazing Easing Effects in Flash

Rafiq R. Elmansy

Rafiq R. Elmansy

mmug-egypt.mxdj.com

In previous versions of Flash, motion tweening was a difficult and time-consuming way to give animations realistic motion effects. The Ease In/Ease Out feature was helpful but its limitations became apparent when you applied it to complex animations because you had to create a lot of frame-by-frame shape and motion tweening to mimic something that looked natural.

Flash Professional 8 enhances easing with Custom Ease In/Ease Out. This new feature provides you with a graph that gives you much more control over tweening. Using the velocity curve provided, you can control motion tweening precisely and at specific frames. In addition, the Custom Ease In/Ease Out feature gives you the option of applying a custom velocity curve for each symbol property independently.

This improved easing feature in Flash Professional 8 can yield amazing motion tweening effects that are easy to create and fun to play with.

This article will help you understand the Ease In/Ease Out graph by showing you specific examples that create interesting animation effects. I also discuss custom easing properties and applying multiple easing effects.

Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Content Management, 2005

Magic Quadrant

Figure 1.
Magic Quadrant for ECM, 2005

Source: Gartner (October 2005)

Market Overview

During 2005, the content management market has continued its transition from a best-of-breed focus to more-mature, fully integrated enterprise content management (ECM) suites. ECM continues to evolve with additional functional components, new stack vendor entrants and consolidation of niche vendors. Many vendors still rely heavily on their legacy strengths in such areas as document management, imaging and Web content management (WCM), and have not successfully penetrated the market as ECM suite players.

Acquisition remains the quickest path to rounding out an ECM suite. As vendors augment their ECM functionality, mergers and acquisitions will continue. One of the reasons for this is that, strategically, clients are looking for vendors that can offer leadership in all of the ECM component areas, even though, tactically, they still may be buying best-of-breed solutions on a departmental basis.

Despite the relative maturity of many of the core ECM components, the products still have limitations. One such gap is the need for a product that fulfills the requirements of the average information worker for desktop content management. With less functionality (typically core document library services and simple workflow) and a lower price point than the traditional ECM products, basic content services (BCS) is a market segment into which the big infrastructure vendors (such as Microsoft, IBM and Oracle) are putting a great deal of marketing and development effort. These vendors, along with Xerox, are bringing low-cost ECM functionality within the price range of small and midsize businesses (SMBs), as well as delivering a basic tool priced for enterprise deployment. This development presents a significant challenge to the established ECM players, which need to clearly articulate their value propositions and vertical process focus.
