Outsourcing in India Pays Off

By  Stan Gibson
News Analysis: Customers are beginning to look to Indian technology services firms to help cut costs and unify business processes

MUMBAI, India—Outsourcing to India has delivered rich rewards for a number of companies, freeing up scarce funds to fuel strategic investments and, in some cases, corporate turnarounds. Next up: enlisting Indian partners to revamp business processes.

And those partners are willing. Indian providers are increasingly moving beyond a reliance on labor arbitrage to create intellectual property they can sell to customers. Several large customers told their experiences here at the Nasscom conference.

"We're aiming for 35 percent productivity improvement next year. Working with Indian suppliers will be a key part of that," said Paul Coby, CIO of British Airways, of Harmondsworth, England.

He said BA has already taken great strides, reducing IT costs by 40 percent and cutting $2 billion from the cost of running the airline. BA has 10 IT partners, two of which, Tata Consultancy Services and NIIT, are in India, said Coby.

Posted by: Tom Donoghue on February 17, 2006 @ 12:50 AM

In an interview with idevnews.com, author Bruce Tate says Java/J2EE is facing dramatic change, and could be "dead like COBOL, not like Elvis." But, Tate also says there is much hope, mostly coming from influences from open source projects and other languages - and he adds that the JCP is ineffective.

Borland to exit IDE market, focus on ALM

Borland Software plans to sell off its struggling Java development tools business to focus instead on selling services and products for managing software development, the company announced last week.
Borland is seeking a buyer for its IDE (integrated development environment) business, which includes its Delphi and JBuilder products. The move will allow it to focus on growing its business in the area of application lifecycle management, or ALM, it said.
As part of the ALM focus, Borland also announced that it has agreed to buy Segue Software, which makes software quality and testing products, in a transaction valued at about US$100 million.
Long known for its development tools, Borland has struggled to hold its footing in the IDE market amid tough competition – particularly from Eclipse, an open-source Java IDE with similar functionality to Borland's JBuilder.
Revenue from its IDE products accounted for just 7 percent of total revenue in the third quarter of 2005, down from 15 percent in the same quarter a year earlier, it said in a US regulatory filing in November.

Microsoft plans to deliver Office 2007 later this year in a lineup of seven suites meant to deliver its most sophisticated business customers new features at higher prices, while still keeping users of its core word processing and spreadsheet apps in the fold.

Officially called 2007 Microsoft Office, the new productivity suite will add tools for routing documents around companies, publishing files to workgroups, and instant-messaging at the office. to the most popular edition of the software, which appears on the desktops of most business computer users, Microsoft said on Wednesday. Microsoft is also adding a new, top-end edition of the product that includes its Groove and OneNote collaboration apps, and introducing a new Web site design tool called SharePoint Designer, to replace its aging FrontPage software. Sun Saddles up Java 'Mustang'

Sun Microsystems has finally released what should be the last beta of JSE6 (Java Platform, Standard Edition 6), aka "Project Mustang."

According to the Mustang Web site, this release "provides a complete stable snapshot of the final release functionality.

"This beta build has undergone much more thorough testing and baking than the regular weeklies (which is why it may seem "old" to weekly build fans).

"This means it provides a good stable base for the general developer community to try out the new Mustang features."

JBoss jBPM 3.1: Multiple process languages and simple principles

Posted by: Tom Baeyens on February 14, 2006 @ 07:33 AM

jBPM 3.1, an open source workflow and BPM engine, has been released. It includes a graphical designer for Eclipse as well as a web application for process participants.

jBPM is based on a simple principle called 'Graph Oriented Programming.' The basic ideas behind jBPM were coded in less than 120 lines, in the following classes:

These are explained in detail in the user's guide, 'Graph Oriented Programming'. The sources are also linked from the documentation.

On top of this new model, we already have support for three languages:
  • jPDL: a language with clean Java integration and superb task management features.
  • BPEL: (alpha stage) a service orchestration language based on WSDL and XML.
  • Pageflow: In JBoss SEAM, we have a simple graph based approach (with Eclipse plugin support) for defining pageflows.

Achieving Amazing Easing Effects in Flash

Rafiq R. Elmansy

In previous versions of Flash, motion tweening was a difficult and time-consuming way to give animations realistic motion effects. The Ease In/Ease Out feature was helpful but its limitations became apparent when you applied it to complex animations because you had to create a lot of frame-by-frame shape and motion tweening to mimic something that looked natural.

Flash Professional 8 enhances easing with Custom Ease In/Ease Out. This new feature provides you with a graph that gives you much more control over tweening. Using the velocity curve provided, you can control motion tweening precisely and at specific frames. In addition, the Custom Ease In/Ease Out feature gives you the option of applying a custom velocity curve for each symbol property independently.

This improved easing feature in Flash Professional 8 can yield amazing motion tweening effects that are easy to create and fun to play with.

This article will help you understand the Ease In/Ease Out graph by showing you specific examples that create interesting animation effects. I also discuss custom easing properties and applying multiple easing effects.
